I already notified registered users of this website, but i want to also warn anonymous visitors about a very critical security hole within ASP.NET.

Last week, some guys demonstrated an action that could help a hacker to attack websites under ASP.NET, regardless of which version being used.

Those guys, first browsing a non-existing page to see error page, and somehow they are getting necessary inputs from there to generate authentication tickets.

In this tutorial, i am going to present how to setup your new Windows Hosting Account.

Godaddy currently provides three types of Windows Hosting accounts. Those are:

  • Economy Hosting
  • Deluxe Hosting
  • Premium Hosting

For a new DotNetNuke user, purchasing a Deluxe Hosting package would be a good start.

Some users asking about why not Economy Hosting package? Because, you may encounter issues with MS Ajax under Economy hosting package. Also it does not let you host multiple websites under a single windows hosting account.

Remember that our goal is;

  • Hosting DotNetNuke at root level
  • Hosting Multiple Websites using single DotNetNuke Instance

how to upgrade dotnetnukePreviously, i have talked about how to install DotNetNuke 5.0 to your hosting account. What if you are using an old release of DotNetNuke? You must upgrade your existing websites to newest release. According to security bulletins out there, old releases have issues with security roles. An attacker could access to your site and gain access to private roles. This is a security hole and an important issue.

The solution
is upgrading your DotNetNuke Installation. With this tutorial, you will have no hesitation during an upgrade process.

Let's get started.

I'm going to cover all required actions to upgrade a DotNetNuke installation hosted by Godaddy. If you would have followed default upgrade instructions on a custom installation, it would most likely to have some problems. It's best practice to read full tutorial first and apply instructions then.

Before Begin:

It's recommended to have following software before upgrading your website.

Before using Memtest download program package from following address:

Download Memtest v1.70

Three download packs avilable for Memtest Diagnostics Tool.

Sometimes you may experience problems with Windows XP Themes. These problems may happen because of following reasons:

  1. Changes on Computer Visual Styles
  2. Disabled Services
  3. Incompetible Theme
  4. Security Issues (spyware & malware problem)
There are some fixes for Theme Problems. Lets discuss some of them:
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Advanced and click on Settings button under Performance tab. If "custom" option is used, ensure that "Use visual styles on windows and buttons" checkbox is checked.
  • In Windows Explorer go to Tools > Folder Options. In General tab, ensure that "Show common tasks in folders" checkbox is checked under Tasks section.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Display > Appearance and ensure that "Windows XP Style" is selected under Windows and buttons drop-down list.
  • Click Start > Run and type services.msc to view Windows XP Services Management Console. Ensure that Themes service is configured to run automatically and check status to verify that it has already started. (Note: You may want to right click on a item on the Name column to configure a specific service)
  • Click Start > Run and type services.msc again. Double click on Terminal Services item on the name column. Click on Log on tab. Ensure that service is enabled for default hardware profile.

If above instructions does not help, what should i do?

How to install DotNetNuke to Root Path of your Hosting Account at GodaddyAfter reading this article, you will be able to install DotNetNuke 5.0.0 release (currently latest DNN release available) application to root directory under of your Godaddy hosted environment. Before go on reading, make sure that you are using one of Godaddy (Deluxe or Premium) Windows plans.

It is very important that, i cannot accept any liability if this tutorial breaks your live environment, notice that this tutorial only works for new installations, not for upgrades. You also should backup your files before replacing them.

However with some effort, you can install DNN to root. I know it's not simple. But i had installed almost all releases from early DNN 4.x to DNN 4.9 release to root path with a good strategy.
