Since DotNetNuke 4.8.3 released last week, it is time to make another touch to my tutorials for shared hosting users of Godaddy.

I don't like them at all, but they provide good options for low price, such as:

  • Great Disk Space/Bandwith
  • Good Control Panels, once you use it, you will get used to use it
  • With some effort you can run multiple websites with your own unique domains under same hosting account.

These are basic features and option 3 is best one i like. However it has disadvantages as well.

If you are planning to host multiple websites under same hosting account to save money, please be aware of shared database issue. Although Godaddy provides huge disk space and bandwith, they don't give customers enough database size to host big-sized websites. This does not mean, you can't host small-business websites under same account.

If you plan to create multiple websites that can share a database size up to 200 megabytes, then please consider using DotNetNuke.

I am also using this method to save bucks, this blog (www.mynetnuke.com) is actually a sub-portal of www.mikroproje.com.

I also have many clients that hosts multiple sites under same account. I'm not going to clearly publish their names here, but i can say that one of my clients hosting following sites under one account:

  • French restaurant website
  • Advocate & Law for Canadian people
  • Furniture & Decoration portal

Basically all three sites are sharing same database, but users, pages, designs and locales can be different. This is a greate feature for those, who cannot afford to pay a large amount per month.

Hi Ismet, could you also consider to put some kind of forum on your site, or something like that.
Just to give other users a way to ask questions or help eachother, so this could be an even better place to help eachother.
For instance I am now moving my websites on godaddy to a new windows 2008 server with IIS 7.
This is working great, except some modules are not working (right now it's snapsis pageblaster, the pro version) this probably is godaddy related, because I don't see anybody else reporting a simular problem (on their forum and don't get any response there either)
Anyway, if there would be people here with similar problems I could get in touch with them.

Hello Radioman, i already have placed a Forum page at this blog previously, but it was not being used actively. That's why i decided to chat users via comments.

About your issue:

I have tried Snapsis PageBlaster previously, with both Godaddy's sharing hosting and a third party dedicated server. Of course they were unexpected problems, but talking with PageBlaster developer helped me a lot to fix issues.

I will reconsider your request about Forum page, but you can ask your question by adding a comment to this post, if you are still interested.

I will kindly reply, if its something that i know.

Regards.

Yes, allready spoken to snapsis and yes, the problem is solved.... was using an older build and thought that I couldn't download the latest version.
Anyway that issue has been, by the way I received your mail when I was just browsing your site.

Have 2 other questions.

1 How do you get captcha support here without setting it up in authentication. I mean, I want to use this also, but if I enable it, I need to enter the code everytime I logon, which would be ok when you register for the site, but I would like to use it for other modules also.
Or is captcha available standard within DNN and you only need to activate it for the logon process?
And if that's the case could you use captcha for registration only, while having login without captcha?

2 Do you know whether or not skincovered will be coming back?

1) Captcha support is provided by blog module (News Articles from Ventrian Systems) itselft, you can check it out at http://www.ventrian.com. What you are talking about is default captcha support comes up with DotNetNuke Core.

I haven't test core captcha support yet, but its something that i would like to check how it works.

2) About SkinCovered, i just asked Nina about status, i will post another reply, if she tells me.

Nina launched DNN Skins again to giveaway free skins, i think you already know that site > http://www.dnnskins.com

And again I beat you to it, about 30 mins. before I received the mail that you replied to my message, I received the confirmation that I am a gold member for ventrian.
Anyway, was looking at some other site and there they had translations for their modules in dutch, so I got interested in these modules.
And then they say there are no coincidences.

About skincovered, I posted a message on their forum a couple of days ago, because I know that, besides Nina there are other people involved there, John Mitchell from snapsis for instance.
And I know that you are a member there also, and that you are having more contact with them, so I had to ask you about this, especially on the day you replied to my other message I was checking their site again and got some security warnings concerning the SSL certificate.
Anyhow, since you're on godaddy and in europe also, it seems to be easier to talk to you directly or through this blog than to them.

Congratulations on your new position within the DNN community ;)

First of all, i need to handle moderation of your comments, i will try to add your account to a user group so that your comments will automatically published.

About Skincovered, i got a reply. Nina says, it will be imported to DNN Skins and i think it will be better to have all skins at a single portal.

About Ventrian modules, i had some weird issues last weekend, i tried to upgrade blog module to newest release and some of my posts disappeared from my blog.
Then i decided to check templates, and it was clear that some TOKEN issue in templates was preventing specific posts to be displayed.

Btw - thanks for greeting :)

OK, just trying if this message automatically gets through.
I am reinstalling all of my portals, so that's why I might be a bit more active around different forums at this moment, I want to put a blog up myself, have been planning this for quite a while allready, just with all kinds of problems I come across and need to hunt down the web to get a solution.
And to get them all in one place I wanted to start a blog on my own, first in dutch only, but if I get visitors there maybe in english too.
I wanted to ask you, because I think that blogs are stored on the SQL server, if it's possible to install another DNN installation, so not in root but in a subfolder you give root rights?
Right now I am having 2 servers, the one where my old installation resides at and one with the new installation under win2008 / IIS7, so I can do a little testing on my own, but I know the size of SQL server is 200 MB, so that's kinda small compared to the size you get on the filesystem.

If this is possible I could get sites that appear to get high use for SQL server apart and maybe create a test server on which I have better control over.... I used to have a testserver installed on one of these free hosting packages that comes with buying a new domain, but that one doesn't give me the full control I need for a test server.

About Nina again, when it gets imported to DNN Skins, will she still be offering membership plans, because I am under the assumption that the skins that use snapsis css menu etc. will not be offered for free as like alot of other skins on that site are free. Actually I asked on snapsis forum yesterday a question about if I should buy the developper edition of this tool, because now I come to the step where I want to make some skins completely on my own.

About the blog again..... Will it be ok if I link to you on my blogging site and sometimes refer to particular parts of your instructions? Don't worry I won't copy them, I will mainly use that blog as some kind of extra memory for me, that's why I will write in dutch at first.

Ismet,

Did you change the standard language of your portal to turkish?
I just came on your site and because I am not using an english (us or uk) version of IE and it's not in my languages I got the turkish login page (atleast I think it's turkish.)
Multiple installs on one server doesn't work, but I don't know if this has anything to do with having a DNN installation in the root or not, could you share your thoughts on this?
I mean, would it be possible to create more than 1 DNN installation on a server when you install each DNN in a seperate folder which you make application root?
I really don't need to have that much SQL space, atleast I don't think that there will be that many visitors to my sites or blogs, but still I am getting kinda obsessed with the idea of trying, but I can't try until I fully moved my portals to another server.
